Representing Iman Academy at the Monash LeaderRise 2025 competition as a team leader was both humbling and deeply meaningful. What began as a simple idea grew into a journey that tested our teamwork, strengthened our leadership, and reminded me why purpose-driven education matters.
Our project, Horizon, was an experiential workshop centred on emotional intelligence; helping students better understand themselves, connect with others, and navigate challenges with clarity and compassion. The foundation of this idea came directly from our own learning environment at Iman Academy. Through our school’s alternative education system, we have experienced first-hand how learning through reflection, discussion, and hands-on activities creates deeper understanding than traditional instruction alone. We had seen it work for us and we wanted to bring that same model to others.
Presenting Horizon to the judges and standing alongside students from different schools was both intimidating and inspiring. Hearing diverse ideas reminded me that leadership is not one-size-fits-all, it is shaped by experience, values, and the courage to address real issues. When our project was awarded second place, it was a proud moment for our team and for Iman Academy, but more than that, it affirmed our belief in learning that goes beyond textbooks.
LeaderRise 2025 was not just a competition for me; it was a reflection of how education, when rooted in empathy and real-world experience, can shape leaders who are thoughtful, grounded, and ready to make change. It reminded me that leadership does not begin with authority, but with understanding and that when students are trusted to lead, they rise.
